What the economy actually is
Why this matters
Most people start macro on the tape — a headline, a rate, a price — with no map to put it on. A number without a model is noise. The first job is to build the map: who produces, who spends, who saves, and how the three connect.
This is the step that makes every other one cheaper. Once households, firms, government and the rest of the world are four linked accounts rather than four words, an inflation print or a bond auction stops being a mystery and becomes a movement between them. You stop reacting to the number and start asking which account moved.
It also gives you the first defence against bad commentary. Anyone who calls a deficit a household budget has skipped this step, and you will be able to say exactly where the analogy fails.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
You can draw the four-sector map from memory and say where a wage, a tax bill and an import each land.
