The central bank
Why this matters
A central bank's headline job is simple: set the price of overnight money. Everything else — the corridor, the balance sheet, quantitative easing, the reserve system — is machinery built to make that one price effective across the whole market.
Understanding the machinery is what lets you read a policy meeting properly. The decision is one line; the statement, the projections and the press conference are where the market finds its repricing. Learn to separate the decision from the reaction function.
This is also where you start to see a central bank as a participant with constraints of its own — an inflation target, a mandate, a balance sheet that can lose money, and a political environment it must survive. The lesson that a corridor sets a floor and a ceiling is the doorway.
